Carolina Box Turtles

Animals

I keep finding these critters in the road. I move them to the other side out of the traffic path.  Box turtles zip me right back to childhood. I just love them!

There is growing concern about diminishing habitat. Box turtles aren’t sexually active for their first 7 or 8 years, so they’re a little slow to reproduce.

Additionally, these turtle have a very strong homing instinct. If you find one in a dangerous place, move it in the direction it was traveling, out of harms way. Don’t take the turtle far. It will spend the rest of its days trying to get home and most likely end up squished. They don’t thrive in captivity.IMG_3606

Carolina (or Eastern) Box Turtles can live to be 100. They have a lot of enemies, natural and unnatural. Help protect them when you can.
